Avisco demolished Building C at a former Uranium Processing Plant. The building (a two story steel frame with masonry walls and interior partitions) was taken down in a controlled deconstruction sequence in order to prevent dust and the potential release of contaminants. The work was performed under a strict site safety plan. Dust was controlled with a fogger misting system that created a humid fog in the work zone to capture and contain dust. Some of the materials were contaminated with low level radio nuclides. Waste streams were characterized, separated, and placed in enclosed containers for shipment either to Evirocare of Utah, a contaminated metal recycler in Tennessee, or a local construction debris landfill.
Avisco was contracted to demolish Buildings K724 and K725 at the DOE facility at Oak Ridge, TN. Avisco completed this project using a LaBounty Universal Processor mounted on a CAT 330 trackhoe. Both 2-story building frames were steel with masonry walls and partitions. The buildings were dismantled rather than knocking them down and cleaning up the pile. The debris was segregated and processed as follows: 1.) concrete and masonry were reduced to rubble and placed in adjacent fill areas, 2.) roofing material was loaded into roll-off containers and disposed of at a local landfill, and 3.) steel framework and bar joists were sized and recycled at a local steel mill. All work was performed under the strict safety guidelines of the Department of Energy (DOE) and OSHA. Avisco worked on Saturdays to avoid disruption of ongoing activities on site.
Avisco performed the demolition of building foundations and removal of process sewer piping, sanitary and storm sewer pipe along with contaminated soil at a former DOE uranium facility located at Weldon Spring, Missouri. Tasks included:
Avisco combined forces with Phillips and Jordan, Inc. to demolish three structures at the Salvation Army site in downtown Knoxville. The facility was approximately 30 feet high by 80 feet wide by 200 feet long. Asbestos abatement was accomplished prior to demolition. A second building (a parking garage) consisted of a structural steel frame with concrete slab and ramps.
Avisco demolished five structures in three locations in downtown Maryville, TN.
Avisco was awarded a firm fixed-price contract for debris removal from the streets in Dorchester County, South Carolina. Avisco employed over 100 pieces of equipment for the project and mobilized them in less than 48 hours.
